Doctoral (PhD) Bursaries in South Africa 2026

Doctoral research programmes. 12 funding opportunities available — updated May 2026.

Funding a doctorate works differently from undergrad. At this level you are usually looking at research scholarships, fellowships and full bursaries rather than the loan-based support you may have used as an undergraduate. The biggest player is the National Research Foundation (NRF), which funds PhD candidates across most disciplines, often alongside your university's own postgraduate funding office. You will also find doctoral support from government departments and SOEs, the SETAs in your sector, the Department of Science and Innovation, research councils, university research chairs, private trusts and foundations, and corporates investing in scarce skills. International schemes (such as Commonwealth, DAAD or Erasmus) are worth a look too if your research has a global angle. NSFAS does not generally cover doctoral study, so this page is about merit- and research-based funding instead.

Most doctoral bursaries expect a strong academic record (typically a good master's pass), South African citizenship or permanent residency for the local schemes, and full-time registration at an accredited university. The make-or-break factor, though, is your research proposal: funders want a clear, well-scoped project, a credible supervisor who has agreed to take you on, and a realistic timeline. Many awards are tied to specific themes, priority skills areas or a particular faculty, so eligibility is as much about fit as it is about marks. Some come with conditions, such as limited outside work, post-study service, or a commitment to publish or teach.

Timing matters. Doctoral funding cycles often open earlier and close sooner than you would expect, with the NRF and many university calls running roughly mid-year for study starting the following year. Give yourself months, not weeks, to line up your supervisor, refine your proposal and gather references. Browse the live list below for the doctoral bursaries currently open, check each one's exact requirements and deadline on the provider's page, and apply to several to improve your odds.

Quick tips

  • Lock in a supervisor and a tight research proposal early — these carry the most weight in doctoral applications.
  • Start with the NRF and your university's postgraduate funding office, then add SETA, departmental and trust funding in your field.
  • Watch the calendar: many doctoral calls open mid-year and close well before the academic year starts, so diarise deadlines now.
  • Apply to several schemes and keep your CV, transcripts, ID and reference letters ready to reuse across applications.
